About Us

Craftwise magazine appeared in the shops for the first time in 1998 with a stated objective of growing the South African craft sector and every issue of Craftwise is still put together with this mind. Published every two months, Craftwise does not focus on any single craft, rather covering every possible popular craft. In it's ten plus years of existence, Craftwise has grown to become the recognized authoritative publication for the crafts sector.

Stitches magazine was launched in November 2007. It was a re-launch of a niche title that we had taken over two years previously. Stitches is also a two-monthly publication and focuses on all crafts which are done with a needle, encompassing all forms of needlework, knitting and crochet plus teddy bear making.

Tucats Media is based in the scenic South African coastal town of Mossel Bay. Our main focus is the publishing of our two magazine titles Craftwise and Stitches 'n Bears as well as the development of our In2Crafts brand. Further to this we are media partners to other large craft events around South Africa.

Out team is often referred to as “The Elves”, a nickname which was given years ago when a reader asked whether we had a team of elves who worked at night to create all the amazing projects featured in Craftwise! The name has stuck, but unlike the mystical pointy-eared kind, our elves are a wonderful, friendly team. We are a happy motley mix of trained and untrained, creative people who really enjoy what we do.

All our efforts are based on our belief that all people are naturally creative and often just need to be encouraged and inspired to allow that creativity to surface. We are not all artists, but we are all creative.

Content for our two magazines, websites and events comes from two sources: firstly from our own team members, and then also from a large group of very talented contributors and teachers from all over South Africa, each an expert in their field. Some are regulars, others less so.

In every issue of our magazines we provide our readers top-quality step-by-step projects, fun competitions with big prizes, product news and reviews. As part of our mission to help grow the craft sector, we offer very competitive advertising rates to allow all businesses an even playing field for getting their message out to new and existing clients. Many of our advertising clients have worked with us since we started and link their own success directly to their relationship with us.

Originally trading as CTC Publishing, we changed our name in 2009 to Tucats Media in recognition of our two very dedicated black feline honorary staff members. It also reflects our wider product offering.

Sharon Calverley

Editor and driving force behind Stitches Magazine, Sharon is also co-founder and sub-editor of Craftwise. She is by nature an avid quilter and textile artist, producing many of the quilts and stitcheries found in our two titles. She reluctantly also keeps an eye on the finances of the company.

Hannalie Hurter

The eye behind the lens - she is our Senior Artist and Photographer. Her training is in graphic design, which means that she does many of the magazine page layouts and is also webmaster of this website. In between, Hannalie dreams up and creates many of the projects in Craftwise.

Lauren Barwick

The friendly voice who deals with everything do do with advertising. She will give you a quote, assist with making up your ad and contact you regularly to check for any changes to your ad.

Owen F. Calverley

Photography, page layouts and webdesign are his main areas of responsibility. Owen also does much of the proofing, keeping his beady eye on the correct use of English and the spelling so that the gremlins are kept in check.

Dana Biddle

Dana is a Contributor Editor for Stitches Magazine, sourcing, editing and writing articles covering the knitting and fibre arts section. A renowned textile/fibre artist in her limited spare time, she also participates in various exhibitions both locally and internationally.

Owen Calverley Snr.

Officially known as the Publisher, Owen mainly has to keep a watchful eye over the Elf Team, making sure that all deadlines are met and generally doing any jobs that the other elves don't feel like doing. This includes woodwork projects, product reviews, book reviews, competitions, data management, web hosting, web design and event management.
